“Could you run over to the pharmacy and pick up a few things for me please?”

Jake wiped his hands on the dishtowel and took the list from me. “Um, sure. Am I picking up the secret ingredient that keeps the bar crowds coming on the weekends?”

“Ha! Not quite. I had to use the first aid kit this morning, and I noticed it is missing a lot. Just take this list—”

“What happened?” Jake seemed genuinely concerned. “Why did you need the first aid kit?”

I waved away his concern. “It was no big deal. William Wrigley stumbled out front and—”

“William Wrigley?” Anger flashed across Jake’s face. “What was he doing here?”

“You know him?”

“Yes, I know him, he was stalking Sarah. That creep needs to stay away from here.”

The accusation from Jake rolled around my brain with the events of this morning. I had decided that William Wrigley was a harmless, older man who was lonely and found a kind spirit in Sarah. What if I was wrong, and he was stalking her? “He seemed nice; I can’t believe he was stalking her.”

“Oh, believe it. Every night at the taproom. Then he started showing up here. I told him to stay away, to leave Sarah alone.”

“Lots of people have a favorite waitress, or—”

“He’s a stalker.” Jake stopped on his way out the door. “I’m telling you, Poppy, you do not want to get involved with William Wrigley. His Mr. Invisible Man schtick is just a way to get you to put down your guard.”

The door closed behind Jake and I thought about what he’s said as I finished cleaning up from the day. William had seemed so sincere in his fondness for Sarah, and his grief. It is possible that he mistook her kindness for a deeper interest in him. It’s also possible that Jake mistook William’s awkwardness for something else. It could all be a big misunderstanding. Or it could be the lead to finally finding Sarah’s murderer.
